What is Lumé Gym?
Lumé Gym is built on one idea:
The body is a system.
Humans are governed by something known as the circadian rhythm — environmental signals that communicate with our biology and tell it what to do at different times of the day for optimal function.
Human biology is especially activated by light. Not just any light, but sunlight — full-spectrum, natural light. And just as light activates us, darkness signals our biology to deactivate and prepare for rest.
This is, for instance, one of the root causes of many modern health issues: we are exposed to too much artificial light, especially at the wrong times of day. At the same time, we simply do not receive enough natural light to properly regulate our biological processes.
We also receive electrons from nature that can act as antioxidants and help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. This is one reason why you may feel uplifted after spending time walking on the beach or in the forest.
We acknowledge that we cannot completely change the way humans live in the 21st century. But what we can change is the environment around us.
Therefore, we have replicated these fundamental principles of circadian biology in one large facility where nature is at the center of everything we do.
The entire facility is equipped with natural light calibrated to the sun. If you arrive early in the morning or late in the evening, you will find that the lights are warm and dim, replicating the natural light conditions of sunrise and sunset to minimize circadian disruption.
If you enter around midday, you will notice that the light is sharper and brighter — because this is the time when our biology is designed for activation.
We use 40 different plant species to naturally purify the air, just as plants do in nature. Plants absorb CO₂ and release oxygen, contributing to a more natural indoor environment.
Most of our equipment is made from natural, antibacterial materials — wood, cork, leather, and more. Even our floors are made from 100% bamboo planks.
There is no Wi-Fi radiation at our facility. To minimize exposure to non-native EMFs — which are virtually everywhere in our modern environment, from cell phones and Wi-Fi routers to power lines and more — all internet and other connections are wired.
The goal is to create a zone with minimal exposure to potentially harmful environmental radiation and allow the human body to interact with a more natural environment.
All of these principles define each of our six zones. The idea is simple: our biology continuously adapts to the environment around us, largely without conscious awareness.
Sound, aroma, and especially light can all influence how our bodies respond to our surroundings. So whether you enter the Recharge Zone, the Biomechanics Zone, or the Outdoor Zone, you will be met with a different combination of environmental stimuli.
The Recharge Zone is all about recovery, cellular restoration, and tissue regeneration. That is why we use red light as the primary illumination, as specific red and near-infrared wavelengths are being studied for their effects on cellular function and recovery.
The same principle applies to sound. We use harmonizing frequencies, including 432 Hz, while our aromas are dominated by lavender to create a calmer sensory environment.
Transitioning into the Biomechanics Zone, which is all about activation, we use our specially designed lighting system to stimulate the body and mind — except, of course, when you train during the early morning or late evening hours, when the lighting adapts accordingly.
Here, we use aromas such as citrus and peppermint, combined with more activating sound frequencies designed to create a more stimulating environment.
That is why we call LUMÉ a circadian gym.
